John Montagne interview, 2002.

In this interview Dr. John Montagne discusses his family and life in White Plains, NY; interest in outdoors cultivated during summer camps with YMCA; military service during WWII; earning his Ph.D. in Geology in Colorado; getting job at Montana State University, Bozeman in 1950s; recollections of Big Sky and impact of logging in the area; Bridger Bowl and developement of avalanche study; getting Montana Wilderness Association started in 1958; use of motorized boats in Yellowstone Lake; the proposed Sun Butte Dam; work of Greater Yellowstone Coalition; conflict within wilderness preservation groups; his ideas about compromising on wilderness issues; and changes within the Montana Wilderness Association, especially in regards to new (young college kids) members and the older members.
